New Organization Promoting Benefits of Medical Cannabis in South Carolina

Poll by Push Digital and WPA Intel shows majority of SC voters support medical cannabis

(Charleston, SC) – There is a new organization in South Carolina promoting the benefits of legalized access to medical cannabis. The South Carolina Cannabis Association is a recently announced Grassroots coalition of Palmetto State compassionate care advocates, farmers and business owners advocating for access to medical marijuana for those who need it.

Wesley Donehue, South Carolina political consultant and entrepreneur, played a key role in organizing the critical mass of support that led to the formation the South Carolina Cannabis Association. Donehue said, “The compassionate care benefits of cannabis are well documented and the public support for access to medical cannabis in our state is strong. These are facts our elected officials must come to recognize and respond accordingly, as there is no longer any excuse for them to be this out-of-touch with the will of their constituents.”

Last week, the South Carolina Cannabis Association, in conjunction with Push Digital and WPA Intelligence, conducted a poll that clearly shows widespread support for medical cannabis. The professionally conducted, independent survey of 600 registered voters in South Carolina from January 22-24 found that:

Most South Carolina voters are in favor of medical cannabis

  • Six out of ten South Carolina voters (58%) support legislation that expands access to medical cannabis

  • This includes a majority or plurality support across all partisan breaks – Majority of Independents (72%), Democrats (65%) and a plurality of Republicans (45%)

  • In contrast, just thirteen percent (13%) are opposed while three out of ten (29%) are unsure

South Carolinians are more likely to vote for Elected Officials who support medical cannabis legislation

  • A majority of South Carolinians (57%) are more likely to vote for an elected official who supports legislation for medical cannabis

  • This too includes a majority or plurality support across all partisan breaks – majority of Independents (70%), Democrats (62%) and a plurality of Republicans (42%) are more likely to vote for an elected official who supports medical cannabis

  • Just thirteen percent (13%) are less likely to vote for elected officials who support legislation that expands access for medical cannabis

Donehue continued, “Just a few short years ago, our state’s laws made it nearly impossible to operate a craft brewery in South Carolina. Through a combination of online organization and direct advocacy we convinced lawmakers the benefits of changing those laws and we successfully allowed for the establishment and expansion of this new, positive industry. That is exactly what the South Carolina Cannabis Association plans to do for the compassionate use of medical marijuana in our state.”

State lawmakers in the House and Senate have introduced legislation establishing access to medical cannabis – The Compassionate Care Act (H. 3660 & S. 366). The Senate and House bills create a regulated system through the state’s Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) that will allow doctors to recommend the medical use of cannabis to patients with conditions such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, cancer and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The South Carolina Cannabis Association sets the foundation to protect and promote the use of medical cannabis for compassionate care applications, as well as advocate on behalf of business owners and agricultural opportunities in South Carolina. The association’s primary focus will include:

ADVOCACY:

SCCA will serve as a resource to the South Carolina General Assembly to implement a sensible and fair regulatory framework in regards to medical marijuana for compassionate care applications.

ACCESS:

SCCA will advocate on behalf of South Carolinians who need access to medical marijuana to enjoy the same quality of life that we all expect.

AGRICULTURE:

SCCA will promote South Carolina’s agricultural system and farmers by increasing the number, type and yield of crop options available to South Carolina’s farmers.
