Mace Supports Non-Smokable Medical Cannabis For Terminal Illness And Lifelong, Debilitating Medical Conditions

Tuesday, January 15, 2019 – COLUMBIA, S.C. – Today South Carolina Representative Nancy Mace announced she will cosponsor the “South Carolina Compassionate Care Act.” This comprehensive medical cannabis legislation would cover terminal illness with a life expectancy of less than one year and debilitating medical conditions including cancer, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, sickle cell, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), often suffered by military veterans, and several other conditions.

State Sen. Tom Davis and Rep. Peter McCoy announced their intent to refile this legislation that would legalize the use of medical cannabis by patients with specific debilitating medical conditions and terminal illness in South Carolina. Prescribed medical cannabis would be subject to a physician’s authorization and supervision, and subject to regulation and oversight by DHEC and SLED.

“States with medical cannabis have seen statistically significant reductions in opioid prescription rates and morbidity rates,” stated Mace. “In the midst of the opioid epidemic, it is crucial to find alternatives while also providing patients with adequate care and relief.”

Mace added, “A key component to the Compassionate Care Act is that we are talking about non-smokable cannabis with provisions to reduce the potential for recreational abuse.”

“I am asked all the time by Republicans and Democrats alike, when will medical cannabis pass in our state… Today, South Carolina is moving in a new direction, and I support the South Carolina Compassionate Care Act in order to increase the wellbeing of our citizens who live with terminal illness and debilitating, lifelong medical conditions,” Mace said.
