Columbia, S.C. (November 20, 2018) – Heathwood Hall students and faculty collected 166 turkeys ahead of their annual Turkey Trot event on Monday, November 20, 2018.
To commemorate the 15th anniversary of the event, the school hosted a turkey donation drive benefitting Harvest Hope Food Bank. The turkeys donated will be distributed to people impacted by Hurricane Florence in Marion, Dillion and Marlboro counties.
“Thanksgiving preparation was a little different this year as several of our counties are still reeling from impacts from Hurricane Florence,” says Keith Ferrell, interim CEO at Harvest Hope. “We are serving more families in need due to the recent disaster and we are extremely grateful to Heathwood Hall for putting this donation drive together. Because of their generosity, families across the Pee Dee will have a Thanksgiving meal.”
Heathwood Hall students ranging from sixth to eighth grade went along to help deliver the turkeys to Harvest Hope.
“We are honored to be able to help Hurricane Florence victims this Thanksgiving,” says Rich Edwards, Dean of Students at Heathwood Hall. “We want to teach our students about the importance of giving back and helping one another.”
Currently, Heathwood Hall has raised almost $13,000 during this year’s Turkey Trot event. Heathwood Hall will continue its support of Harvest Hope Food Bank this Thanksgiving by collecting canned goods during tonight’s Hoffman & Hoffman Thanksgiving Classic basketball games. The first game begins at 6 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items and toiletries to tonight’s games.
